Is it a good idea to put a red-tailed shark with black mollies?
i have had a red-tailed shark for a while and i bought a pleco from the pet store, and they are such good friends that they share a cave. so i went back to the store and bought some mollies, and when i added them, my shark started to nib at their fins. should i take them out?
Are these 'top contributors' kidding, RTBS tend to do very well in a community tanks, yes they may be the boss but it's highly unlikely that they would kill tankmates smaller such as mollies. I have a red tail in a planted aquarium with 30+ tetras (he doesn't even notice them) 10+ rasboras (same) 6+ livebearers( again no notice) 6+ otto affinis (no notice) and a siamensis flying fox (which he chases of every now and again) The Siamensis is the largest fish in the aquarium measuring 6" and the shark a similar size, he possibly sees it as a threat so keeps him in check. The other fish go totally unnoticed. Generally it's the shark that is commented on the most by friends who look into the aquarium, striking black and vivid reds make this addition a favourite of mine.
Tip purchase a smaller specimin and add to an existing aquarium rather than a newly started one.
